PLAN INTERNATIONAL KENYA (PIK)
Plan International Kenya’s (PIK) strategic goal in the next five years is to end teenage pregnancies and end all forms of sexual and gender-based violence against adolescent girls and young women. We aim to help create an enabling environment where girls and young women are safe, valued, equally cared for, and have equal opportunities. PIK will contribute to the global strategy by aiming to reach directly approximately 2.75 million (children, including girls and young women over the period of the strategy 2022-2026 and to reach additional project participants through its interventions.
With approximately 38 years of experience in implementing its programme, PIK mainly operates in 12 geographical areas; Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Tharaka-Nithi, Siaya, Kwale, Kilifi, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Turkana, Marsabit and Tana River.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Project Coordinator for the CP WASH project will ensure successful initiation, planning, implementation as well as monitoring and reporting of the specific project interventions and budget, to ensure the project outcome areas of the project are realized in Turkana. The Project Coordinator will provide direct supervision of the Project Officer WASH and with support from the line manager, the incumbent will liaise with other project teams for synergy and integration of project interventions across the project locations. The incumbent will support in partnership oversight and stakeholder engagement.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND MAIN WORK ACTIVITIES
Effective Technical Project Design, Planning and Implementation (35%)
• Responsible for coordinating the day to day management of the project’s climate proofing WASH outcomes to ensure high quality programming.
• Facilitate effective mobilization of program participants to effectively engage in the different components of the project.
• Defines, updates and shares clear project work plans, tracks progress and articulates changes in project activities clearly and in timely manner.
• Understands the project management cycle and utilizes tools (including detailed implementation plans) effectively to implement and achieve project results.
• Achieves project results, and monitors appropriate benchmarks, targets and performance indicators in collaboration with the MERL Officer.
• Ensure the delivery of the project to meet the standards of Gender, Equality and Inclusion, that addresses the integral connection between gender and climate change. while applying the project gender marker at all stages of the project.
• Support the generation, documentation and dissemination of evidence on the benefits and lessons learned on project outcomes through the project’s M&E as well as through specialized research/social action researches etc.
• In consultation with Project Manager and Nurturing Futures Project Coordinator support the Administration and Logistics Officer to manage vehicle movement and other logistics in and around the field office.
Partnership and networking (20%)
• Ensure collaborative roles and partnerships with key Project partners, county partners, County Government, National Government line Ministries, Private sector, Community Based organizations, NGO, Learning Research institutions and any relevant authorities.
• Participate in the Annual County Government’s Planning and Budgeting process to influence women participation to the push for access to gender- responsive public services and Climate Change Adaptation.
• In liaison with the Project Manager (Turkana West) and Senior Project Manager (Nairobi), provide oversight to local implementing partners.
Quality Assurance, Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation (20%)
• Coordinate the partners to effectively support the project to carry out all assessments including baseline, ongoing monitoring, evaluations and reporting.
• Support the Senior Project Manager (Nairobi) and Project Manager (Turkana West) and the MEAL team in setting project targets and monitoring/tracking milestones.
• Work with the Corporate systems to ensure the project is in SAP and PMERL platforms for alignment and reporting.
• Mobilize community partners and support joint monitoring visits with key partners to track and document program progress in the targeted counties.
• Contribute to regular project narrative reports and communication materials in a timely manner, ensuring that implementation of gender transformative programming is clearly articulated and supported with high quality data, results and lessons.
• Support the development and submission of program reports and core documents as per donor standards and guidelines.
Financial Management (5%)
• Set up of budget in the systems in collaboration with Finance team
• Manage, track, update and coordinate the implementation plans and budgets.
• Monitor expenditures to promote prudent budget management and adherence to approved budget.
Risk Management (5%)
● Identify, develop and manage project risks related to the CP WASH project outcomes.
● Promote compliance with Plan Kenya and donor requirements and regulations in project implementation
Safeguarding Children and Young People (Safeguarding) and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) (5%)
• Understands and puts into practice the responsibilities under Safeguarding and GESI policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), ensuring that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
• Leads the orientation of programme staff to ensure that they are properly inducted on and understands their role in upholding Plan International’s safeguarding and GESI policies;
• Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Safeguarding Children and Young People and GESI are fully embedded in project design, during implementation and as principles applied in day-to-day work of Programme team;
• Ensures that Plan Kenya contributes to Plan International’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and GESI, including making sure that relevant reporting and data are submitted.
Other duties (10%)
• As assigned by the Line Manager
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Qualifications/ experience essential:
• Bachelor’s degree in Development studies, Project Management, Social Studies, Natural Resource Management or other related fields.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in coordination and implementation of climate related initiatives and WASH projects.
• Technical knowledge of natural resource management/ climate change adaptation and other relevant sectors to advance Climate Proofing and WASH while challenging social norms and women social economic empowerment.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking and representation skills;
• Proven leadership qualities, problem-solving and negotiation skills, and evidence of successful team player.
• Demonstrated involvement in the national, regional and international feminist movement, especially the ecological-feminist movement, is desirable.
Languages required
• Ability to communicate in English, Kiswahili and local language in Turkana will be a requirement.
